Have you ever had an occasion when you want a very unique cake to share with family and friends? Last summer, I had the occasion to enter a Cub Scout father and son cake baking contest. I went to the cupboard to find the only cake pans we had were 8 inch round cake pans and 8X10 rectangular cake pans. How can you bake a unique cake with this selection of cake pans? We made a noble attempt at making a unique fun cake. We soon found that the cake pans presented real challenges in our creative moments.
We went to cut the round and rectangle cakes into special shapes only to have the cakes turn into piles of cake crumbs. By the time we finished, both of us swore that we would never try to bake another cake. We did win an award for our efforts. Our cake pans brought us to a new low in cake baking. We won the Worst Possible Cake award.
Since that time, I have explored the world of cake pans. To my dismay the creativity of cake pan manufactures is limited to Bundt cake pans, dough cake pans, rectangular cake pans and round cake pans. So I decided to go to a local hardware store and purchase one and two inch rolls of aluminum to make my own cake pan designs. With metal strips, one can bend and shape almost any kind of shape. Once the shape is formed simply insert the metal designs into a rectangular cake pan for creative cakes to become a reality. Some of the cakes shapes made have been Ford Model Ts, dogs, cats, horses, and busts of friends. It all starts with cake pan design.
For those people who want customized cake pans, you are still restrained by the tradition cake pans. They good news is the cake pans can be colorful and can have hundreds of different pictures or designs on the cake pan or cover lid. These types of cake pans can be purchased from retailers like Target or special ordered from a company named “That’s My Pan”. The cake pans will be the traditional pan types of 9X9 dough cake pans, 8 inch round or 8×10 rectangular cake pans. They can be personalized with different color pans and lids, and many different art forms that make the cake pans a display item in the kitchen.
